Adult ADHD Assessment in Sydney

If you're wondering whether ADHD might explain a lifetime of feeling out of step — easily distracted, struggling to start, restless, forgetful, or living from one looming deadline to the next — a thorough assessment can give you a clear answer and a way forward. We provide comprehensive, evidence-based ADHD assessments for adults.

You may recognise some of these

Common ways adhd assessment shows up. You don't need to tick every box for therapy to help.

  • Difficulty starting tasks, even ones you want to do
  • Trouble sustaining attention on routine work
  • Easily distracted by thoughts, sounds, or notifications
  • Restlessness, fidgeting, or feeling internally "on"
  • Losing things, forgetting appointments, missing deadlines
  • Acting on impulse — spending, speaking, deciding
  • Time blindness — chronically late, underestimating effort
  • Bursts of intense focus on the wrong thing

Evidence-based approaches we use

Therapy tailored to your situation — drawing on what the research says works, and what fits you.

Evidence-based

Clinical Interview

A structured developmental and current-functioning interview, covering the domains required for ADHD diagnosis under DSM-5 criteria.

Evidence-based

Validated Rating Scales

Self-report and (where appropriate) collateral measures — including the DIVA-5, ASRS, CAARS, and others as clinically indicated.

Evidence-based

Differential Assessment

Careful screening for conditions that can look like ADHD or co-occur with it — anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep issues, autism spectrum features — so the diagnosis is accurate.

Evidence-based

Detailed Written Report

A thorough, jargon-free report with diagnostic conclusions and concrete recommendations — for you, your GP, psychiatrist, employer, or educational setting.

What working together looks like

A clear, paced approach — no jargon, no rigid template.

  1. 1

    Intake & history

An extended interview covering your developmental history, current functioning, and the patterns you want explained. Usually 90 minutes.

  2. 2

    Testing & screening

Validated rating scales and differential screening — to confirm or rule out ADHD and identify anything else that's contributing.

  3. 3

    Feedback & report

A feedback session where we walk you through the findings, followed by a written report you can share with your GP, psychiatrist, or workplace.

Practical details

Medicare rebates, telehealth, and Surry Hills sessions

With a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates on up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. We offer both in-person sessions at our Surry Hills rooms (Level 1/17 Randle St) and secure telehealth across NSW — many clients move between the two depending on the week.

ADHD Assessment — frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

Yes. Clinical Psychologists are qualified to diagnose ADHD using DSM-5 criteria. To access stimulant medication you'll also need to see a psychiatrist — but a psychological assessment gives you a thorough diagnostic picture, a report, and a clear pathway forward.

The assessment typically involves 3–4 sessions across 2–4 weeks: an extended intake, testing and screening, and a feedback session — followed by a written report.

Diagnostic assessments are generally not covered by Medicare in the same way as therapy sessions. We'll discuss fees clearly upfront before you commit, so there are no surprises.

A full diagnostic conclusion (with reasoning), a summary of your developmental and current functioning, identification of any co-occurring conditions, and practical recommendations — for daily functioning, work or study accommodations, and onward referral if needed.

Yes — adult ADHD assessment via telehealth is well-supported by the research and works well for most people. We use the same evidence-based protocols regardless of format.

You still get a thorough understanding of what is going on. ADHD shares features with anxiety, trauma, depression, sleep issues, and autism — and many people who screen positively for ADHD turn out to have something else (or something else as well). Either way, you leave with clarity.
