Medicare rebate of $149.05 applies to sessions with a clinical psychologist under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (current as at 1 July 2026). Rebates apply equally to in-person and telehealth sessions.
How the Medicare rebate works
Three steps — your GP does most of the paperwork.
1. See your GP
Book a longer appointment and ask about a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). If therapy is right for you, your GP prepares the plan and a referral — you can ask them to refer you to Roderick Gawthrop at Agile Clinical Psychology.
2. Book your session
Bring (or email) your plan and referral before your first session. You can book online at any time — the referral just needs to be with us for the rebate to apply.
3. Claim after each session
You pay the session fee and we help you claim the $149.05 rebate with Medicare. A plan covers up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year, with a review by your GP along the way.
Workers compensation and private health
We're a registered WorkCover provider — sessions under an approved workers compensation claim are billed directly to the insurer (please arrange approval before your first session). Some private health extras policies also cover psychology; your fund can confirm what you're entitled to.
Fees — frequently asked questions
The questions we hear most about costs and rebates.
No — you can book directly at any time. A Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP is only needed if you'd like to claim the Medicare rebate.
Yes. Telehealth video sessions attract the same $149.05 rebate as in-person sessions when you have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan, so your out-of-pocket cost is identical.
Many extras policies include psychology cover — check your level of cover with your fund. Note that you can't claim both Medicare and private health insurance for the same session, so it's worth comparing which leaves you better off.
We ask for at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations and missed appointments may incur a fee, as the time has been set aside for you. If something unexpected comes up, get in touch as early as you can.
